Darker Images
If you were expecting some beautiful smiley images today you may need to wait till tomorrow. I am in the middle of an ethnography project related to the culture of Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Last night Matt joined me in a drive down to L.A. to do some interviews. Although I love creating images which reflect the best and the happiest times in life, I also like to represent the other side of the world. There is a mundane, there is pain, and there are people and cultures living in circumstances far different than we enjoy. Part of my passion for photography is to bring some of these realities out of their context and onto your screen. Although the below images aren’t incredibly deep they are a taste.
Image 1: We got lost going down to L.A., and while we were looking for a freeway I saw this great green wall. I hopped out, set my camera on the ground with a flash and timer, and did a quick self portrait.
Image 2: We finally found a freeway even though it was the wrong one. You can see the smoke from the fires which are currently raging in Griffith park.
Image 3: A girl I met on Olvera Street. She spoke very broken English, but didn’t mind me photographing her. It’s funny the places you will meet tourists.
Image 4: A man I interviewed in Union Station who absolutely despised everything about the place. We did however have a good conversation and he was laughing pretty hard at a couple points.
Image 5: Downtown L.A. a few blocks from skidrow.
Images 6 – 8: A few photos I shot of Matt near another cool green wall we found.

I really like both the pictures and the stories that go with the pictures. Seeing the same people, talking the same conversations, living the same life every day, I often forget the other world several miles away.
